KICS signs MoU with 5G/6G Innovation Centre (5G/6GIC) of the University of Surrey

Collaboration for “Beyond 5G/6G technology development and joint research”

The Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences (KICS) has entered into an MoU with the University of Surrey’s 5G/6G Innovation Center (5G/6GIC) on August 31, 2021.

KICS is hopeful that the MoU will pave the way for research collaboration for Beyond 5G/6G technologies between researchers in KICS and Surrey’s 5G/6GIC.

This MoU was signed to strengthen cooperation and discover ways of collaboration between the researchers for sharing ideas and conducting joint research on Beyond 5G/6G.

The details of the MoU include reinforcing collaboration for R&D in Beyond 5G/6G and development of 5G/6G testing platform, expanding the scope of cooperation through continued future joint projects, holding an annual workshop/seminar, and exchanging information.

Younghan Kim, President of the KICS, said, “This MoU is expected to enable us to cooperate for innovation and produce synergy between the two research institutes with leading expertise in 6G technologies.”

Een-Kee Hong, Professor of Electronic Engineering at Kyung Hee University and Chair of the KICS 6G research Initiative, who will lead this undertaking, commented, “The KICS’ top experts on key 6G technologies will conduct in-depth discussions on the direction of technology development.”

Professor Rahim Tafazolli, Head of Surrey’s 5G/6GIC, said, “KICS is a highly influential network, an engine for growth in communications technology through its members in South Korea and elsewhere. This MoU will enable us to leverage leading expertise within 5G/6GIC and the institute’s academic and industrial partners, forming collaborations that will be an important step toward delivering cutting edge 6G technologies to the world.”

KICS, the largest ICT institute in Korea, has over 28,000 members and 30 specialized research groups. It provides open networks for universities, corporations, government-affiliated agencies, and research institutes for engaging in academic activities, technical cooperation, and policy reviews in ICT.

Surrey’s 5GIC is the world’s first academic institute dedicated to 5G research and innovation; 6GIC was launched in November 2020 with its unique 6G vision. Surrey’s large scale 5G testbed, which consists of 77 MIMO cells and made-in-the-UK 5G Core by Surrey researchers, will be used for tests and trials of advanced technologies.

The MoU is valid for the next 6 years.
