The whole world is still suffering seriously from the COVID-19 outbreak that began in January, and Korea was at the center of the difficulties. However, despite this crisis, Korea has moved forward and the Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences (KICS) has also grown. The ability to break through such a crisis is the power of KICS. KICS system has been developed well and the members' enthusiastic participation has made KICS to shine even in the midst of this crisis. KICS has solidified its position as a representative of Korea's information and communication society thanks to the active participation of KICS members. During this year, KICS has focused on the following issues and achieved the results accordingly.
The 11th International Conference on Information and Communication Technology Convergence (ICTC 2020) was successfully held at the Ramada Plaza Hotel, Jeju Island, Korea from October 21th to 23th, 2020. The conference’s main theme was "Data, Network, and AI in the age of ‘Untact.’" ICTC is a unique global premier event for researchers, industry professionals, and academics. It is hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) of Korean government and organized by the Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences (KICS). The conference program included plenary sessions, invited industrial sessions, special sessions, and technical paper sessions.
The KICS Fall Conference was held on the 13th of November, 2020 at Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea. The conference, which was held parallelly in Korean and English, was completed successfully with the participation of 500 researchers and 300 paper presentations. Due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic situation, this conference was held in a virtual format. The main events were broadcasted to all the participants to ensure their immediate access to the conference.
The 6th ICT Convergence Korea 2020 conference was held online via Zoom Webinar on Tuesday, July 14 and Wednesday, July 15. With the catchphrase, “Convergence Era Opened by D.N.A.,” it was co-hosted by 23 organizations, with about 850 experts and researchers participating in the event. An opening speech by KETI President, Kim Young-sam, was followed by an address from Jang Seok-young (2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology Information and Communication) and a welcome speech by Park Se-woong (Chairman of the Korea Communications Society).
The KICS Open Workshop on 6G was held successfully on December 3, attracting more than 100 online participants. The primary goal of this workshop was to exchange views on research direction and topics, technological challenges, and issues to be considered in 6G. Under the leadership of Saewoong Park (KICS president), Jinwoo Park (6G forum chair), and Eenkey Hong (organizing committee chair), this workshop was honored by four distinguished speakers, including Prof. Howon Lee, Prof. Eenkey Hong, Prof. Kyunghan Lee, and Prof. Younghan Kim.
On August 20, 2020, the inaugural general meeting of the 5G-based Smart Factory Standardization Forum was held at the Sheraton Seoul Palace Gangnam Hotel and hosted by the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA, Chairman Younghae Choi) and the Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences (KICS, Chairman Saewoong Bahk). This forum was established to serve as a think tank for government ministries related to smart factory in Korea and cooperate in technological developments related to the 5G-based smart factory.
The ceremony celebrating ICT Express' inclusion in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) Edition of Web of Science was held on 17th November, 2020 at the Millennium Hilton Hotel, Seoul. ICT Express was accepted for indexing in Clarivate Analytics' SCIE on October 27, 2020. It is the second international journal from the Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences (KICS) to be indexed in SCIE; the other being the Journal of Communications and Networks (JCN).
